The Wascana Country Club, located in Regina, Saskatchewan, has a rich and enduring history dating back to its founding in 1911. Established by a small group of Regina residents, Wascana was envisioned as a true country club—a place of recreation, relaxation, and social connection set apart from the growing city. The founders sought a peaceful setting where members could enjoy golf, equestrian activities, and leisure time away from the bustle of urban life.
After careful consideration, a parcel of land south of Wascana Creek was selected, and the property was officially secured in 1910. Development began immediately, and in 1911, the Wascana Country Club was incorporated by an Act of Parliament. Within a year, the first clubhouse was constructed, a one-story frame building designed to accommodate golfers, social events, and dining. The facility included men’s and ladies’ dressing rooms, a large lounge, and even stables for members’ horses and polo ponies, reflecting the club's original vision of offering a full countryside experience.
From its earliest days, the club became a hub of Regina’s social scene, hosting lively events, elegant dinners, and competitive golf tournaments. Over time, improvements to the course and facilities were made, and the club’s reputation grew within the community. However, tragedy struck on September 9, 1929, when a fire of unknown origin destroyed the original clubhouse. Thankfully, five people asleep inside the building managed to escape unharmed. Despite the total loss of the building and many personal belongings, the club community rallied, and a new clubhouse was constructed the following year on the same site, thoughtfully designed around the original fireplace that had survived the blaze.
Wascana continued to expand and evolve throughout the decades. During the 1930s and 1940s, despite the hardships of the Great Depression and World War II, the club remained active. Members volunteered to maintain the course and facilities, often working together to protect the property from harsh conditions such as droughts and dust storms. The clubhouse was gradually expanded to accommodate growing needs, with additional locker rooms and facilities added over the years.
In 1960, recognizing that the clubhouse was no longer adequate for the size and needs of the membership, a major redevelopment project began. Under the leadership of the club’s board and with the support of the membership, a new, modern clubhouse was designed and constructed. The new facility officially opened on September 22, 1961, marked by a supper dance and ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Lorne Johnson, a long-standing member with the longest continuous membership at the time.
Around this same period, the club expanded its grounds by purchasing 40 additional acres from the Government of Canada, allowing for the development of a driving range and practice facilities, further enhancing the golf experience for members.
In 1993, Wascana underwent another significant transformation with extensive renovations to the clubhouse. These improvements included updated locker rooms, the addition of the Northwest Room, and the creation of the Spike Lounge, ensuring the club remained modern, comfortable, and appealing for members and guests alike.
Throughout its history, Wascana Country Club has been fortunate to host a number of notable visitors from around the world. Renowned figures who have played the course include entertainers such as Bob Hope and George Kirby, hockey legends Jean Beliveau and Gordie Howe, members of the British Royal Family including The Prince of Wales and The Duke of Kent, and Louis Meyers, a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500.
The club has also played an important role in competitive golf within the province and beyond, hosting numerous city, provincial, and national tournaments over the years. From the early days of interclub competitions to hosting national events like the Canadian Senior Ladies Championship, Wascana has been a cornerstone of Saskatchewan’s golf community. The club’s professionals and members have also made their mark in competitive golf, with many achieving provincial, national, and international success.
The Wascana Ladies' Section has been a vital part of the club's history as well. From its earliest years, the Ladies' Section played a central role in organizing tournaments, raising funds for clubhouse improvements, and leading social events. Over the decades, the section has grown in size and influence, hosting prestigious competitions and supporting women's golf at all levels.
Despite the many challenges faced throughout its history, from devastating fires and economic hardships to environmental struggles such as droughts and floods, Wascana Country Club has remained a place of tradition, resilience, and community. Generations of members have contributed to its growth and success, ensuring that the club continues to thrive and provide a welcoming, exceptional experience for all who visit.
